Hey /sci/
Today was my last exam this semester. Analysis 1 and I fucked it up. Means I have to rewrite it again next semester and if I fail again, then my studies are over. I feel so helpless. I can't concentrate and don't have a strong drive or willpower anymore recently. For the math exam I studied 5 days but it wasn't enough. I can't get myself to be more disciplined. I am in the 4th semester now and it just gets worse.
I basically fucked up this whole semester this time. Maybe I am too dumb for that?
What should I do to improve? And how did you get through those math classes? It's real analysis, not numerical analysis btw

Try to understand the content matter, not just memorize the facts/formulas/methods to pass tests. Understanding the content will help pass tests and more importantly give you a better understanding for when you actually need it later in life (i.e. career)
Fuck the modern school system, way too much memorizing and way too little learning and understanding

I can relate I have struggled with really severe depression and anxiety for many years but the past 6 months especially have been difficult to deal with. Namely because of a premature death in my family/lots of drama following that, working increased hours/overnight shifts and going to school full time as well and trying to keep my grades from tanking. My overall GPA is almost an A and I am in the last year of my degree program. In order to graduate with my bachelors I need to take 2 required courses. One is a math course, and the other is a language class. These are courses that honestly should not be difficult. When my professor is explaining the concepts in the class I get 90% of what is being said...and yet I am fucking struggling. I completely fucked up my first math exam too. I had slept for 2 hours the night before and just made so many stupid mistakes. In what was supposed to be a course that I planned to obtain an A in, I will be lucky if I get a C-. What the fuck should I do? I can't focus, I can hardly concentrate on studying when I'm alone. If I fail this class I am fucked because I have postgrad plans. What should I do you think I should do?

If you don't have a job, try studying at least 4 hours a day. If not that, every other day. If you have a job, just get it in whenever you can. If you're not putting time in, you won't understand.

Just this one. Then I am done with it. I only study Computer Science and I have this class together with the people that study mathematics. I passed linear Algebra and my C and Java programming classes right on the first try. So I am not completly retarded I guess. I also thought that I would understand Analysis when I did my exercises, but the exam did show me that I didn't.

These exams usually test the basics of these concepts, and not advanced stuff. Especially Analysis I is just 100% basic shit.
Post where you are from , I studied at different universities and I took almost all math courses due to swapping my field.

1. Swallow your pride, no time to doubt yourself or self pity yourself

2. Get a hold of the exam you failed, ask to go look at it so you see what you did wrong and what not.

3. Get a hold of other old exams by that prof and see where they are similar and where they differ , if you can't find any write to somebody from the upper semesters, again, swallow your pride

4. Do the exercises until you have memorized them, usually per semester you have around 10-12 exercise series. With 6-8 questions each. You don't want to miss exam questions that are very similar to the exercises or even 1:1 equal.

5. Once you memorized the exercises, solve the old exams and see where you are still having troubles.
5.1. Memorize the definitions, you can't prove things if you don't know the definitions verbatim. Memorize important inequalities that were derived and used in the lecture.

6. If you are absolutely having troubles ask somebody from the upper semesters. If they ignore/scoff/mock you just ask somebody else. Swallow your pride. It doesn't matter whether you are a brainlet or not or somebody else thinks you are a brainlet.

7. Make an effort and ask questions to your prof. He doesn't know who you are, and he won't care. But he will be able to answer you exactly what he wants to read on the exam. Asking the right questions is key.

8. for your next semesters, try to make friends/groups. I never did and it hurt me a lot. I struggled a lot and I didn't learn more from it than people who socialized for 5-10 min and learned from eachother more quickly.

9. If you are having psychological issues, and are afraid you will fail again the second time, consider swapping university and retaking the course somewhere else with more than 1 attempts. It's nothing to be ashamed of and a legit strategy that many people use. The system allows it.

Yeah, I aggree. My professor also told me that I don't need to be a genius to pass the class, as Analysis 1 is still doable with exercises and applying the same concepts all over again.
However at the exam, I was even partly confused at what I had to to exactly, as even the questions challenged me. Nothing as easy as in the homework. The only thing that went well was the proofing convergence.

Often times the exam questions are the parts/bits that are omitted and "left to the reader" in the lecture, so small proofs. Not really difficult if you like to do math but if you just want to compute stuff it's not for you.
My advice to you, if you really want to do CS, swap university (if you really only hjave 1 attempt left), complete your BsC somewhere else, and then return for the masters.
I think going in with only 1 attempt is going to rape your brain (at least it would do mine).

There is nothing heroic or redeeming about setting youjrself up like this to fail.
