what about medieval farmers? we know from manuscripts of the era that farmers worked from sunrise to midday or about 6 hours. after which they had the rest of the day for themselves, typically to make alcohol, drink it, gamble, socialize or work on their hobbies. now his return on energy for the agriculturalists is 4 to 1.
notice a pattern here?
an 18th century factory worker works 12 hours a day in shifts.
a 20th century office worker works 8 hours a day and commutes 2 hours.
a 21st century worker works 8-10 hours a day and commutes 1-3.
his energy thing is a meme he is trying to force. the reality is civilization squeezes efficiency out of human time. it has little to do with energy and a lot more to do with what people are doing. everyone in the world could run their own farm, but there would be a glut of agricultural products and it would be a slow and boring world with little development technologically or advancement socially.
again, the planet is a lot bigger than the humans occupying it, who largely sit on coastlines in massive clusters for WORK efficiency.
