Yes. The top universities have very few classes, which also helps the students get better GPAs. Students are getting fucked over hard at non-brand name universities.

Those Harvard classes will assign hours and hours of work though. If you're taking a degree at Harvard you caren't coasting through with just attending 3 classes a week, you're probably doing labs and recitations daily, and your entire weekend is trying to finish homework.

It's true for the elite universities, because they want to keep up their minority racial quotas. Since that forces them to admit lots of sub-par students, the universities must dumb-down the curriculum in order force the minority students not to flunk out. That's why universities do shit like switching to a pass-fail system, abolish final exams, or this.

Ivy league schools are a complete meme.

My EE professor's daughter goes to Harvard and she told him one thing they do during class hours is sit in a circle and have a conversation about relevant topics, where the students lead. He tried to replicate it in class a few times, but only a few students would speak up.

The amount of mandatory structure gets lower the better the school you're attending is.
Schools like Harvard and Princeton impose the minimum amount of structure on their students they can get away with, because the goal is to give exceptionally talented students freedom to take advantage of all the world-class science going on at those schools instead of wasting their time (and the somewhat more valuable time of their faculty) with 60 hours a week of required coursework.
Sure, a few students may coast through doing little, but these people are just there for a degree and there is no value in trying to force-feed them huge amounts of technical info they don't need.

Classes are of very little importance. What really matters is what you do outside of class, which is the whole purpose of giving students a loose class schedule so they have lots of time to take advantage of all the opportunities to do interesting shit at an Ivy.

Of course this mindset only makes sense if you actually have a thriving department with lots of stuff going on in it.

I beg to differ on this.
Im at EPFL and the work load is kinda absurd.
Worst was 3rd year Bachelor, 1st semester: 11 subjects.
Although fewer subjects are a much safer bet.
Many subjects worth few credits are a trap, the professors always add a bit more work. Kinda hard to do anything about it when those classes are mandatory.
Few subjects worth a lot of credits are better, the professors can only give you so much work, after a point there's just no more they could think of giving you.
Ur expected to know and thoroughly understand the subject just to pass the exams.

The trustfund kids, are who keep ivy leagues going, massive donations so they get accepted, or their parents actually paying ludicrous tuitions so they can party in a frat for 4 years with all the other rich kids are what keeps ivy leagues alive. Minority students only are there so the rich kids can say they have a diverse background and have a black friend. Uni doesn't give a shit if they pass or fail as they're just tokens to make their target audience feel good.
The uni doesn't actually give a fuck if the minorities pass, they're a net burden and don't actually pay tuition.

Oh, sweetie... Unless it's a lecture, class is about discussing the material and asking questions about stuff you dont understand. Generally we'll also go over examples as a group to solidify concepts. If it is a lecture, then the teacher talks and we listen/take notes.

Protip: reading is for nerds. Ill usually use text-to-speech to listen to stuff I have to read, but otherwise there's a saying; "Skim required readings, skip everything else."

Interesting. In uni I had two kinds of classes.

The first were lectures, where the teacher talks, you note every word he says and question won't go further than "what word did you write here?". The second classes were in smaller groups, with teaching assistant, and focused on solving exercises handed the same day. Most of the time, you'd never finish every the exercise sheet. You'd have to wait a week or two until the teaching assistant sent you the answers.

It must be funny to have this kind of Harvard style classes. I picture students at home, cramming hundred of pages using text-to-speech and whatnots... And in class, the teacher just sits down asks :

Many people in state schools take 18-21 credit hours a semester. When I did my masters they recommended 9 credit hours and the first semester I did 15 credit hours and it was painful, 9 was much better. Must be cozy at Harvard minus the poz.

Ivy Leagues are a joke, academically speaking. People with rich daddies go there to accumulate clout and suck the right dicks to succeed in the wage market. If you actually care about learning things, go to MIT or Cal Tech, or a state school that's highly ranked in your area of study.
