I'm a highschool teacher working at an elite private highschool getting paid a fuckton though and it's reasonably easy work.
Honestly OP if you can show you are competent and really good at physics there are a lot of rich people willing to pay you big bucks to teach their kids.
This also applies internationally. I personally speak Japanese and I've worked and lived in Japan as well teaching rich kids but I make almost 3x what I made in Japan in the US and thus I left. But what I made in Japan is already higher than what most people make in the US.
Academia requires you to be exceptionally gifted, autistic and have spend your entire life from birth dedicated to the science. Then also know the right people and then also be willing to compromise the quality of science to promote papers that are more commercially viable.
This means only 0.0000001% will be successful in academia.
