Our continued survival all hangs on the continued habitability of a single planet. An ELE could come from anywhere, at any time. And how low the odds are doesn't even matter, because if it happens even once, then we are done. Our entire species, done. Possibly all life on earth, done.
Besides that, moving into space and colonizing other worlds is 100% inevitable for our species. It's something we want, and need to do. It's only a matter of time. So either way you look at it, being able to survive on multiple planets is smart, productive, and an absolutely necessary stepping stone to our future. And of course, because things are this way, there's a whole shit ton of money and power involved in it all which, dirty and immoral as it is, just tends to be the thing to get things done.
