That video is 14 minutes of him describing an ad-hoc definition (albeit a more accurate one) used by non-medical personnel. He's a therapist. Therapists are not medical doctors. Psychiatrists are.
The DSM does not recognize congruent depression/clinical depression as a distinction. There is only Major Depressive Disorder.
No psychiatrist is allowed to diagnose you with congruent depression. There are no treatment or clinical standards for congruent depression. There is not even formal recognition that there is such a thing as "clinical depression" as a kind of abnormal condition vs. congruent depression. There is only MDD/Depression. You can diagnose only with MDD. You can treat only for MDD. You can prescribe medication only for MDD.
He's absolutely right, there ARE situations where it's normal to be depressed, and someone should be depressed, but the existence of that phenomenon is not recognized in psychiatry. Therapists can't prescribe. Psychologists can't prescribe. They are distinct fields. Psychiatrists can prescribe, and they don't believe there's such a thing as congruent depression.
