even though i would rather be seen as a pure mathematician, i chose applied math because of the more interesting research prospects (quantum computing, cryptography etc.). also there are so many more subjects, which is good if youre a learning freak. at my university, applied math students can take up to three times as many subjects per period as their pure math counterparts. we get all the cool pure math classes like abstract algebra and topology, and then our own goodies like statistics. ie pure math is a subset of applied math.
also applied mathematicians seem to be much more dilligent and hard working than pure mathematicians, who sometimes come off as "im intelligent just lazy" narcistists. were often called "boring nerds" by the computer science and pure math normalfags, which we take as praise of course.
fun fact, applied mathematics is the most common bachelors degree at the cia. pure math is like at 8th place.
