Outside of data analysis - if you knew a thing about topology, you would know that it is relevant to physics. You don't even know to talk about crazy condensed matter research into topological insulators which are classified by fucking K-theory, you can just look at the Aharanov Bohm effect. How useful is that? God knows, but that is real world physics research. It might help build quantum computers, it might not do anything, it might do something 1000 years from now on that we can't imagine. Science doesnt have very predictable return on investment. Thankfully mathematics itself is very cheap. It runs on donuts and coffee pretty much.
