All these fucks apart from the path of travel retard are right in some ways. The issue is you're trying to ask why a complex phenomenon in aerodynamics functions which is usually taught piecemeal over various courses in uni and everyone is trying to compress the info into a small understandable nugget to the layman. I recommend this vid: https://youtu.be/aa2kBZAoXg0 it's a decent lecture but it's still ~30 min long.

He is absolutely right. The air going over top has to move faster, dropping the pressure. The air beneath moves at the speed the plane is propelled forward, having a higher pressure, thus creating lift due to a pressure differential.

Not that anon but the solution given using only Bernoulli's principle fails to explain why there is a greater velocity over the wing v.s. below the wing. Unless you can explain the velocity differences all you're doing is just saying a wing produces lift because it does.

There's a stagnation zone of high pressure air at the leading edge of the airfoil right? High pressure air moves to low pressure regions, and a larger pressure differential will result in faster air flow. Now look at pic related. As the wing moves through the air, it pushes the air below it forward and leaves an empty space above it. This is due to its angle of attack. Therefore, the pressure differential is higher above the airfoil than below the airfoil, and the air traveling on top accelerates faster.

there's a counterexample to this where the airfoil is cambered and not symmetrical.

in that instance its the coanda effect that provides lift as the AOA(this has multiple definitions because confusion is good you see(not)) can be zero and the plane still achieve lift(so im told and in theory it should be possible as the greater bend on the upside will accelerate air thus lowering pressure on the upside relative to the downside.

correction. it is still mostly actionreaction that provides lift, however with a cambered foil you could have lift even if direction of plane is the same as the twist of the wing.

Go look at a wing being tested in a vacuum chamber. You will find it is impossible to generate lift without enveloping the entire wing profile.

Any jet of air particles bouncing off the wing will do nothing but damage it

It's both. Planes flying upside down are less efficient because they don't generate as much lift. You can obviously fly a plane straight with completely flat wings if they're angled downwards and you can also fly a plane straight with asymmetric wings that are level with the ground. You can fly a plane with flat level wings if the whole plane is angled with its nose up.

If the wing was completely symmetrical and tilted with zero degrees, it would just slide through the air without generating any lift whatsoever. Tilting it creates the pressure difference. This is not rocket science folks

The shape of the airfoil accelerates air downwards.
This action has the reaction of air accelerating (pushing) the wing up. This accounts for most of the lift generated.

There are different pressures above and below the wing, but the lift associated to this pressure difference is only a small fraction of the total lift generated.
