I found out that you can rehearse before you open the book, what you've been learning. As a meditation. So, you've learned different methods, techniques etc. Just imagine you're at the book and applying whatever it is you learned. And then include some positive reinforcement through suggestion to motivate yourself. I think it's useful if you have problems that are hard, or you keep making a technical mistake. It's like taking a deep breath before cursing in public.

Can someone explain in picrel why you can write the infimum like that? I get that if you can write U{Xn < a} ? ?, then the proof is complete. I also get how {inf Xn < a} = U{Xn < a}, but how does inf Xn relate to {inf Xn < a}? Is it because as long as you choose "a" to be big enough big enough, then inf Xn ? {inf Xn < a} which is all you need?

I think maybe you are getting a little confused with exactly what you are trying to do. $inf X_{n}$ is a function that takes in an element of the sample space and spits out the infimum of the set of values of $X_{n}$ at that point.

To show it is a random variable, you need to show that it is a measurable function. Thus it suffices to show that the **set** $\{ inf X_{n}<a\}$ (which is the set of all points for which $inf X_{n}$ is less than a) is an element of your sigma algebra.

This is exactly what you do when you write it in the form $\bigcup \{ X_{n}<a\}$ .

You're wrong on two counts.
3x^2 + 15x + 25 = 0 factors to (3x+5)(x+5)

secondly, for functions with no factors or solution in real numbers, there is always the complex plane and you'd see that using the quadratic formula.
