You can do numerical work very efficient in Mathematica (if you know how...) and it saves you a fuckton of work if you do analytical stuff.
3D-Plotting data from an excel file or solving a ode literally takes a minute while it takes some time to do it in python or sage.
On the other hand: only useful in academia, almost no company uses it for daily work. For this I would suggest python. Fundamentals of both are easy to learn so it wouldnt be a waste of time...
