Oh I get what you're saying. Yeah okay but Angara is literally the same idea as Yenisei. I THINK their idea is to have two different rockets though because big space programs always want options. Idk it's all very confusing. I haven't looked at the stats but there has got to be overlap between an Angara variant and an Irtysh with common cores slapped on. In MY opinion they should ditch Angara completely and just fly Irtysh / throw common boosters on the make the Yenisei. Angara is retarded it just confuses everything but it's the most "real" rocket that has flown already a couple of times. I think it's supposed to be a military successor to the Proton but it's dumb if Irtysh can do the same shit it needs to do.

They would both have had the same SRB fallout risk, which is to say deadly in both cases, fuck SLS. Ares-1 gets a pass for being so bad it's good. SLS on the other hand is so bad it's bad.

I think the biggest problem is that with the Energia family there were actually real possibilities to reuse the zenit boosters all while having effective hydrolox core which means you would both get more capability for cheaper. Energia-M could launch up to 35 tons to LEO for an example.

With Angara and Irtysh you don't have anything in common and with Yenisei you need even more (expandable) Irtysh boosters just to make up for it not having a hydrolox core.

Plus in hindsight Ares-1 is all you need for the Artemis program. It can get Orion to LEO as the bare minimum, which is all it really needs to do before docking to a starship or some other transfer stage and going to the moon. Pretty stupid that constellation got cancelled and they essentially decided to just build the Ares V as SLS, but SLS has lost pretty much all cargo missions
