There are basically 2 electrode types, penetrating and surface electrodes, and for proper connection you will need to use penetrating electrodes one way or another to access specific points of the brain.
Not only it's a biocompatibilty issue between the electrode itself and the brain enviroment, but the fact that you penetrate it is already causing damage. The problem with brain is unlike other body parts, even tiniest cut may result in dire consequences since it's like cutting out a random piece of transistors in your CPU.
Unless they learn for brain to grow around electrodes and accept their signals this strategy will never work.
Id go even as far as putting some arrays into a brain of a baby because thats the only way it can adapt without cutting it open.
