If you shot a man through the heart and then put him into a science-fiction cryo-sleeper he would still be alive in that suspended animation and wouldn't die until thawed and allowed to bleed to death. However if his skull and brain were crushed while in suspension we need not consider him alive, although his heart might beat a few times upon thawing.
