So I wondered about producing silicon chips on Mars, so I looked up how etching silicon works. Bro it's fucking EASY now, a regular garage of fairly cheap equipment can be a small scale chip lab. Even the production of the silicon crystals seems to be a modest industrial process, looking at it. It strikes me that advanced tech can be fairly easily bootstrapped by a competent workshop provided with good materials and a quality database of parts to work with.

The problem is that garage fabs are multi micron scale and modern CPUs are about 10,000 times smaller. You can't even fab a 386 with this stuff. EUV photolithography is incredibly hard.
