But back when I was a grad student I remember being told you need to at least be comfortable with non abelian gauge theories and pretty much all but the last 10% of Peskin and Schroeder to begin on string theory, otherwise there's no point
That said, zwiebach manages to introduce pretty sophisticated stuff to undergrads.
