Portugal had excessive mortality up until November during the Delta wave - then abruntly came done as soon as Omicron became dominant and our winter is looking like it will have the least excess mortality in the past 5 years. We know this is related to the variant - not the vaccine.
Because South Africa in January 2020, had roughly the same cases per million as Portugal back in November 2020 (at a point when no vaccines had been deployed), and alsothe same mortality per million. Fast forward to Omicron wave, South Africa with only 30% of the population fully vaccinated and barely boosted had only slightly higher mortality per million than Portugal up until last week and they have been surpassed by Portugal presently.
