>>14164186I'm a psych major and have had experience in psychotherapy, counseling and philosophy of mind, but I have come to DESPISE the psychiatry industry. For almost all of its history it was a pseudoscience used by criminals to abuse human beings. First it was used to illegally detain and torture dissidents/thought-criminals, nowadays it is used for drug trafficking to even children.
An example of this is how they fuck up about major depression that leads to suicide. The standard psychiatrist protocol is detention and pumping them full of drugs, because "depression is just serotonin imbalance!" But It had been shown over and over again that SSRIs don't even work in preventing suicide. In fact, those on SSRIs are more likely to an hero. The threat of imprisonment also makes them more likely to lie about their condition, or ensure that if they ever heroed it should be fatal, like an instantaneous headshot.
On the other hand, psychotherapeutic, philosophical and existential methods in treating depression and suicidal ideation are more effective. Giving a depressive a copy of Camus'; "Myth of Sisyphus" can be better in preventing suicide than getting him addicted to SSRIs, because Camus actually addressed the question of suicide itself, instead of the typical psychiatric methodology of blaming it on muh serotonin.
Another form of abuse is, as someone mentioned before, the overdiagnosis of ADHD. Chilsdren's brains literally evolved to seek stimulation. It's part of the learning process. If the teacher had a terrible pedagogy, of course kids won't pay attention. But what the psychiatry industry does is gaslight parents that there is something inherently wrong with your kids, and to solve this, we must pump them with amphetamines, making them addicted for life. College students nowadays can't even study and pay long-term attention without the assistance of Adderall.
Foucault and Szasz were fucking right. Psychiatry had been a tool for oppression and crime.
