I would stick a module with engine, necessary stuff and some additional room for 'living' at the bottom, and while in space would pull out 'apollo-servce-lander-docking' where they would make 360 deg turn and dock with it, for additional living space.
Dragon would be at very top of rocket while launching for potential abort, you can expand internal living volume of dragon with module while keeping heatshield intact...
