It's just like assessing a weapons lethality with a single number. Nukes and bombs are more 'lethal' than a blunt knife or a spoon but if we evaluate a complex system an give it a score we will inevitably get some stuff wrong.
Just because it's in its early stages doesn't make it invalid - intelligence, IQ, etc is a vague and primitive way of measuring someone's ability but it's the best we have. We'll make something better.
Also pattern recognition & memory is pretty much everything when it comes to discovering our world. That's what science is - discovering how our world works and figuring out how we can use that to get what we want.
It's all pattern recognition and memory, try making a robot that uses randomness to interact with the world - sure it may move around but it will never achieve anything with consistency.
