It was a competative school, but offered great funding for poor pupils who managed to get in on merit. I was an invaluable source of social mobility for my family, we went from farmer peasants to doctors and academics in one generation. The alumni network isn't preposterously rich, but we did enough to keep it going.
Within my lifetime I saw it turn from a school of excellence that valued culture and sports just as much as it did academics (although academics was always the focus and our school had the best scores in the state) and with over a century of Western tradition to become just another cookie cutter daycare centre. And it was done very much on purpose by the district board who forced it to get rid of the merit system (under the guise of calling it "racist") and eventually they were forced to get rid of advanced classes, cultural activities like choir etc. and now they brought in "decolonialisation" and other wokeshit in.
There is a very intentional movement to destroy excellence in Western education. The effect was the most dramatic in France, but it is coming for US/UK and the rest of the Anglosphere too.
