More generally, we need to embrace non-intermittent zero carbon energy cources (i.e. nuclear). Solar power is great day-to-day but if it's used on the grid, it collapses when anything goes wrong. Solar will be a part of the solution but it is not the entire solution.
In addition, we will need to close the carbon loop. Currently, the carbon is once-through. It gets used, burned, and then dumped into the atmosphere. We will need to re-form it into various hydrocarbons (e.g. plastics, oils, fuels) and re-use it. A portion of these captured hydrocarbons should be put into long-term storage (either underground or in Yucca Mountain as a hydrocarbon plastic such as HDPE
