Like an idea, numbers are a great way to reference quantifiable tangible objects, but they only exist when 'thought' about. I suppose if we wanted to go a step further and try to define a thought in terms of physical processes we could get to a point where the largest number is some electro chemical interaction that 'perceives' the most optimized largest number representation.
