Selections are neither positive or negative in anything but the immediate environment and for long as it is that way. In the case of female selection process, inflicting a shitty life on a child is selecting those outcomes which snip the branch, but more problematically, they change the immediate environment on a non-zero and compounding way en masse.
There is a buffer zone based on the good traits of others, and when that threshold is no longer sustainable, all of these bad traits can only be extinguished through one way. What you call good is the very seeds of calamity.
