What's like to study in an elite/really high prestige university?

Recently got admitted for a masters to an elite German institution (tu9 and part of the excellence thing) but I come from a very shitty home uni were it was rare to have your profs hold PhDs.

What can I expect?
What sort of opportunities will this open up for me?
Will I finally study with non retarded people?
Is it really challenging?

Germany is starved for degree holding professionals and more so for engineers.
You're so starved for professionals that I know plenty of people that have gotten pretty decent jobs just with their latin American degree and they were not even engineers.
Heck, know a shit ton of medical doctors that don't even have EU citizenship and are here on a sponsored visa.

The job market for engineers here in Germany is by any metric fucking great.
Why is everyone on this site an end of the world doomer?

I graduated and work at an "elite" university, but I don't regard any of the other universities as inherently inferior. Read the links I posted. There are only 40k new engineering jobs every year and we are currently training over 400k students.

What are you calling international?
Without an EU pass you're basically fucked here unless you're a doctor.
Also, I'd say most international students can't or won't into German and are indians or pakis on a student visa.
Meanwhile, I already have a B1 in German, I have an EU pass, residence certificate and even my very own fucking tax number lol. I'm pretty much a German citizen at this point.

Sure. My friend is a Spanish engineer with 30 years experience and C1 German who can't find a job. I know unemployed native engineers too, it's not that rosy, better than other EU nations for sure though.

I assume that this before taxes. 52k is around what places like fraunhofer pay. Their payments are publicly agreed or something so you can know exactly.

If they're particularly ambitious they'll do a berufliche Ausbildung or something but I've met very few people that actually want to pursue a degree.

Listen you are extremely delusional if you think Germans "choose" to work those jobs. I know that this is a common racist assertion in the expat community, but it is complete bullshit. Native Germans have been pushed out of university spots and entry level professional positions for over a decade now to make room for cheaper immigrants. For every native German that breaks into engineering after graduation there are 2-3 that are underemployed. The main difference is that going on unemployment benefits is still heavily stigmatized so they would rather give up and take a lower paying they are ordered to take than live on benefits and hope for more.

There are now something like 1 in 5 children growing up in poverty in Germany and it's of course being done on purpose. You don't experience these things if your the target immigrant group, but your children will (check out DESTASIS, there is 70% unemployment in second generation immigrants).

The entire country is one big ponzi scheme by selfish boomers who fucked up the pension funds.

At the start they were paid more to get them settled, but now they only get Harz 4 payments which is shit (it would not cover my good bills for example if I want to keep eating enough protein). Most of have not even passed the A1 German exam yet, something like 60% are unemployed 5 years on now.

Of course, Germans have the preference of wanting actual working white people (includes far east Asians) to immigrate here since our elites are going to force immigrants on us anyway, but you should be warned what you are getting yourself into. You can look up the stats I mentioned earlier. However, if you come here with a plan to work in a specific industry and you train at unis who supply those industries you have a decent shot. Research is also great in Germany, but hyper competative (we train like 100 PhDs gor every 1 Professor position or something crazy like that).

Idk dude. I'm New in this country. This is what Ive been told l literally by the Germans I mention.
The ones I've met that actually want to go to uni are the younger ones, as in zoomers. (Well except for one that went to a Waldorfschule and now wants to go backpacking as a career)

The refugee system in this country makes little sense desu.
As a newly arrived immigrant (immigrant, not expat) with EU citizenship the only advantage I have over a refugee is that I can work right away.
Other than that refugees get a monthly salary, apartment, access to really fucking cheap food, free German courses, etc.
The state also doesn't let them work for like a year since they arrive.
I really don't get the German refugee system.
I also don't get who supports it, all the Germans I know are pretty livid about it.

I know a lot of refugees, I think the condition to work is that they pass a B1 test and since the government, at this point, is pretty desperate with getting them to work they're pretty much handing out free B1 certs.
Know a couple of dudes that are B1 certified and they know basically no German, they've been here for years and can't even correctly order a sentence.
My hope is that in the coming years the general public unsatisfsction with the refugee fiasco forces the Reichstag to take corrective measures, but then again I'm newly arrived and I'm a long ways from understanding this country so in the end I have no idea.

Sorry. Also to be clear, there ARE real labour gaps, just not the kind they are vaguely implying there are. Germany has a massive oversupply of fresh STEM grads. It has an undersupply of experienced technicians (not engineers), caretakers and farm workers (willing to work for sublegal wages).

It depends on many things. The German idea for making education open to internationals is knowledge exchange. If you come to Germany with a purpose like "I want to study X field and learn about Y technology/skill because I think there is a market gap in my country" then you will do very well. This is not the anglosphere where a graduate degree is a qualification with meaning. You get an education for a specific purpose, it doesn't work on some vague notion that you can get a job with it. You are wasting your time and money if you don't have a purpose.

Yes.

Yes. If you want to stay in Germany you should know that less than 1% of non-EU nationals who graduate eventually get a work visa. Most return home. It's still possible, but I don't know why you would want to.

I don't know how it is in Germany. But in the US we have a significant overseas presence. In fact, probably half of undergrads at elite schools are foreign and maybe as much as 90% of graduate students.
This significantly changes the atmosphere. Competition is very real. I found that using every possible resource including purchasing homework and buying answer keys and so on is included. It's just very competitive and the focus is geared towards having straight As at any cost.

I don't know about your school but in my experience there were companies that were emailing professors who were just desperate to get people to work at their company.
That's about it. You probably appeal more to certain companies but you could get that job regardless probably.

yes but it's probably very competitive and there are still retards who get very good grades by cheating and extreme effort.

not really. Maybe slightly more challenging but very comparable to elsewhere. The professors tend to be either really bad and jaded (large courses) or really extremely good, first class professors (niche topics), which really helps when the professor is good.

Not him (and also not that elite, top 10 only), but he described it pretty accurately. Most professors are lazy and haven't changed their course in 20+ years. So "soft cheating" (practising old exams that were supposed to be locked away for question re-use, getting tutored by student who exclusively teach them exam question tricks etc.) is very rampant. So the courses can be difficult if you study it traditionally (actually spending time reading the textbook, recommended papers, practising questions beyond old exam questions etc.) What's more is it depends on your ethnicity more than anything whether you get access to the resources (Asians won't share with you unless you seduce one of them etc. or trade for something they don't have yet.). If you can get access though you will easily get As in the course.

One time when I was a grad TA we actually tried changing the exam structure of a thermodynamics III course (to be more computationally focussed). Because of the change we made so easy so that any student who actually studied for understanding got full marks easily, but there were only about 3 of those. We got sued by the international students who also got the embassy and local mayor involved all because they were prevented from cheating. Also a local kid who had the top grade up until that point started his own law suite, but quickly dropped it. They all failed, they couldn't answer very basic questions where they were required to think instead of remembering answer patterns. (I've told this story on /sci/ before if it sounds familiar).

Also another funny experience I had with t*tors who charge extreme rates (like 100+ usd an hour) who don't actually understand the course material. So when I change the structure of an old project they all asked me if I could tutor them. I told them to go fuck themselves and made an annoucements to the undergrads to stop paying for shitty tutors and use the office/tutorial hours.

The "top tier" universities can be better understood as a financial model that relies on a combination of reputation alumni donations, visa loophole scams, and state capture of public funding (which is often against the interest of the tax payers base, as is the case in anti-Western liberal arts departments, but also in STEM R&D where we've seen many recent scams with high professors selling us out to the CCP). Therefore the job market in this more international/reputable universities is highly oversaturated with PhD grads because the business model relies on training a massive oversupply of worthless PhDs. Meanwhile there are many parallel universities that conduct completely different lines of research focussed on benefiting regional companies. The latter is not oversaturated and they don't hire PhDs simply because they graduated at brand name unis, the only exception is when the research overlaps or they have connections other companies/funding sources.

Hard to say, but coming from a «name brand» uni helps getting the attention of professors if you want to pursue research. In my case, I was able to get research internships every year by telling people I came from uni X on behalf of Prof. Y.
Likewise, my having a PhD from a name brand uni seems to attract lots of industry people (although from a pure research standpoint, the actual uni does not really matter, only your advisor does)
