How different would history be if Constellation wasn’t cancelled? I could see it still being super delayed but we’d have Orion flying to LEO by now and Ares V would probably be done or almost there

Nah fuck that they should face the consequences of their actions. Thousands of jobs deserve to be lost. That or let SLS fly out of stubbornness and burn through the pocketbook. Pretty soon NASA will get pissed off and declare that there is no funding for any science because all the budget is being blown on a rocket that can't launch anything but an overpriced capsule

Think about if you were NASA, you knew the sls wasn't sustainable but that is what you had planned, then starship comes around but you know NASA would go for it. Now not only is NASA going for it but its going to launch before SLS. I bet NASA is scrambling like crazy to figure out their path forward

Imagine SLS but even more expensive, also I guarantee you it would still be at the state SLS is right now. NASA wanted a vehicle to get to the Moon and they went with shuttle-derived not because it was fast but because it satisfied congress in keeping jobs. No one building SLS gives a fuck how long it takes as long as money flows

Honestly this is pretty reasonable. There's no way for NASA themselves to get rid of SLS. They'll probably just take advantage of the soonest opportunity they get to switch to something they know is better. After their emergency bid award to SpaceX I have more faith in them doing good things.

why havent we seen spacex in more shows/movies/books/etc? apollo and the space shuttle were everywhere in media but spacex is almost nowhere to be found.

that's not what the augustine commission found in 2009. they estimated that ares v wouldn't be available until the late 2020s and that a lunar lander wouldn't be ready until well into the 2030s. and to do that you needed to kill the ISS in 2015 to free up money - if you did that then ares I + orion would have been good to go by 2017, but they wouldn't have had anywhere to fly.
don't mourn for the loss of constellation. the ares v looked good on paper because it only existed on paper. we're so much better off without it.

well, that was just enterprise. columbia was scheduled to be ready in 1979 and then it got delayed 2 years because of the tiles. the shuttle had a bigger budget than SLS has but the whole point of SLS is that it wasn't supposed to need to develop new tech.

That pic brought back so many memories of childhood…I remember watching videos on Constellation in space camp as a kid. We watched the one where they land on the moon then the other one where they use nuclear ships for Mars. Good times good times

to be fair, that wasn't the plan at the time. they thought that they'd finish the J-class missions by 1971 with apollo 20 and then move on to extended lunar surface stays with the second production run of saturn Vs.

Yeah Apollo could’ve seriously benefitted from pushing for a base right off the bat. Maybe make Apollo 13 an orbital mission (lol) that has an unmanned LEM land a base down? Then Apollo 14 arrives at the base. 15 carries another module, and 16 brings 2 crew. Apollo 18 would be the third manned sortie to this base, which now has three modules. Apollo 19 debuts a larger LEM that can carry 3 people or 2 and a lot of cargo. Apollo 20 lands a European on the moon alongside NASAstronauts, which makes Apollo harder to kill because Europe is on board.

Don’t know where to go from there.

i don't think that's something to be held against the rockets themselves though. this was all bleeding-edge technology in 1968 and costs would have come down. 20% of the cost of a saturn i-b was the instrument unit, for example - that wouldn't be the case if we had stuck with it.
