It's been a decade since Elon Musk's Tesla had been working on autopilot. But even with 10 years in development, it's still nowhere close to good.

Because level 5 driving implies NOTHING LESS than AGI. It is pretty much the hardest problem you could choose. It's even harder than creating decent humanoid robots, as those aren't going around at 120 km/h with the certainty of causing death at any small mistake.

What do those have to do with my post? Calculating a distance has nothing to do with intelligence. The tesla computer could trivially have realised that, despite the car moving, the moon was still viewed from the same angle, which implies it was very far away.

The car is running neural net inference, not generic compute machine. If you were to run a real time generic calculation for moon distance, it would consume ton of resources that cars computer cant handle.

I guarantee you this system has a general purpose CPU at it's disposal, somewhere in the car. Calculating the position of the moon in the sky can be done with a calculator, it does not take "a ton of resources" even by 1970s standards.

By using only cameras to make the decision it will keep thinking anything that looks like a traffic light is one.
It doesn't have a sensor array or multi-camera setup to evaluate its shape, or a map to check if there are traffic lights there, ...

all automakers are working with various sensor and processing suppliers to develop forms of self-driving. tesla's is only special because it's slightly more advanced, but only slightly. GM's is pretty much as good. Tesla just releases the most marketing about it.

The position of the moon and sun can be calculated based on the orientation of the car, the position of the car on the globe, and the time of day. No special hardware is needed for any of this.

Then, when the black box ML model claims to see a traffic light at the position where the sun or moon should be, that result from the ML model can be discarded. No special hardware is needed for this either.

The reason Tesla isn't doing this is because they're lazy and don't want to spend the time or money creating special case sanity checks on the output of the ML model. They want the ML model to drive the car directly, with no supervision from expert systems. This is insanity.

There are other types of radar too, that software from the other thread already uses fusion of multiple sensors.

As far as I'm aware, Tesla already uses sensor fusion between optical and radar sensors. So Elon Musk is being truly disingenuous when he talks about the problems a lidar-only solution would pose. He knows what sensor fusion is; his cars are already using it. The reason he refuses to include lidar is because lidar is expensive and the whole scheme is about making him money selling cheap hardware and vaporware promises of software that will never be realized as claimed.

This. It doesn't matter how many google servers you use to get your car to report 10^(-n)% error, you only need 1 freak accident for the entire algorithm to not matter and throw off all of the learned data. The right way to do it would be to strap redundant sensors everywhere and have multiple overrides if systems fail. More than likely it will pave the way for the roller coaster highway, which is by itself a very bleak future. The only solution is to drive in the right lane that you know is made for the car or just drive with your hands

Its not an case of "lets use both", its case of why not optical alone? Optical systems do not need lidar. Lidar systems need optical systems.
