Have you ever invented anything, or filed a patent for something? Did you make any money off of it?

yes - several proprietary algorithms.
yes - two software patents (so far). I think software patents are a cancer but my employer loves them.
yes - a lot, I plan to retire in my 30's.

I want to explore this, I’m not sure how to go about opening a business and I’m also not sure how exactly to market my machine. Who would buy it? Individual users would need lots of extra space, about the same space needed for a tanning bed, give or take, also they need to have water hookups because it’s a bath tub.
Maybe sell the frequency generator configuration separately so that people can use them in their own bath tub?
My invention wasn’t made with marketability in mind so it’s difficult for me to think about.

So what do you need money for? You would not know what to do with it, you dont have any kind of business plan. I would suggest you open a new age-like homeopathic therapy-style spa and thats how you cure people. Just dont make scientific medical claims, say its all pyramid energy but since you say it works? Just do it, it's that easy. If you need space than ask institutes, fitness centers or something else. If you need bathing tub than think the other way who has and use yours for other purposes. If you need money ask friends and family or use credit cards.

because I started out as a sysadmin. wrote some shell scripts, then some useful tools, then went from there. turns out I'm a fairly good low level coder. most of my stuff these days is in C , Go or Rust but I've used higher level ones too such as Python and JS.

A nice side effect was that it helped bring my granddad and I together. He didn't like me very much because I was a skaterpunk and admittedly a bit of a douchebag who enjoyed pushing adult's buttons. But he was really proud that he could show his friends the review of the game in PC Magazine. Old people love being able to brag about their grandkids. While he wasn't a gamer, he gave it a try and did ok. He was really into those Louis Armour books so the western theme was of interest to him. Since I was getting older, I was being less of a douche, which made it easier to rebuild the relationship. Without the game to open the door, we might have gone the rest of our lives not really liking each other. So sometimes to benefits of an invention goes beyond the money it makes.

Yes but imo there are tons of problems with the business and law side of things, If you do actually make something worthwhile you are pretty much given 3 options, A - Work for a big company and let them take care of that side of things but are forced to work on what they tell you to, B - Start your own business and have 0 time to work on your product etc or C- make it public domain and see nothing in return. If there was a secondary type of patent which was free to use by all companies (that pay the licensing fee) essentially giving up the quasi-monopoly on that idea, I'm sure career inventors would be happier and much more productive.

You forget the fourth option: B1 - found your own startup, get funding to accelerate hugely, go all out about the invention, and hopefully succeed.

A patent is like a firewall and closes off the rights for others to use (some variations depending on jurisdiction), and then you have a license that regulates what use you will accept. Often there is such a clause for defence use for patents funded by DOD.
In any case, too many companies try to steamroll inventors, so you need good counsel and a good strategy from day one.

Yes, I amon a patent for cleaning silicon wafers. I believe there were 6 of us total that were credited.
Did you make any money off of it?
No, the IP belongs to my employer because we were hired by the company and using company resources and company time.

Haha not quite. I got a raise + bonus that year. But in my field, it's the exception for you to own the patent instead of the company. I'm just thrilled to be listed because I can add it to my resume and leverage it for a better pay at my next company.

Option 5: File a provisional PPA and license to an inventor friendly company (the larger the better).

From what I've gathered, this is the best option, however the internet is filled with slimy middle men who charge people a lot of money for the privilege of being tricked into signing away the IP rights.

There is serious research into this, obviously for astronaut use but also fighter pilots. I have seen on YT the weird contraption female pilots use and can understand they hesitate to let go mid flight. Down side is that pilots are often under hydrated.

Much of the urine can be recycled as long as you can separate out the useful parts such as water (about 95%), salt, creatine and more. What is left is more easily disposed of, and useful as fertilizer.

This is a comfy thread but I think a separate board would not make it visible enough. If we have a good, dedicated OP we could turn this into a general. It take a lot of work and may meet resistance from mods. For instance they kicked /scg/ off to /adv/ where it just died, /adv/ is just a desert of inactivity. Now /scg/ is going well and has a good OP msg plus a FAQ that is live and being updated. I think that is the threshold we have to meet to make an /invention/ general.

But I only did all that to make my work there (operator, laboratory worker) easier, and it solved some problems Shipping had been having for way too long (freaking YEARS ... combination of a very bad calculation method, bad interdepartmental communication and so on --- server based system, no more communication problem).

It is actually rather depressing how common such a state of affairs is; each department in a company a little kingdom ... and totally outdated technology.
