Samples would been collected from patient zero by a hospital in China. The samples would then be taken to a research lab for study. I mean, where else are you going to study a new disease than in a new disease lab?
It is entirely possible that the virus could have spread to a researcher by accident, or been dropped from a petri dish.
If Trump had simply recognized that the virus was as bad as his own advisors were telling him it was, and shut down air travel from China, it would have been another story like SARS. Tough luck for China, but unknown anywhere else.
