It would just make it economically viable to use GMO E. Coli or yeast to produce the drug instead of growing it. Given the fact that the profit margin comes from legal risk, I doubt that a more expensive mode of production would significantly change much. The cartels are the best placed to invest in a new model, so really you might not see any difference at all.

Hard drugs are too addictive. The prohibition copes are retarded, because a prohibition obviously reduces the amount of consumption of a drug. It doesnt have to be perfect, if hard drugs are legalized tomorrow half the people on the street will be junkies.
Alcohol is not so bad because it takes months of heavy drinking to become an alcoholic, while a single use of heroin will hook you. Most people never try because normal people do not know any drug dealers and do not prowl the streets looking for them.

the drug cartels start manufacturing more meth or some other synthetic stimulant. Eradicating natural coca would accomplish nothing even if it were possible. During the Regan years they tried to destroy weed crops in Mexico with herbicides so they developed more potent strains that could be grown indoors.

In 2015 they made a morphine precursor, in 2020 they made a bunch of alkaloids present in coca.
This is published research. If people actually made cocaine they would likely not publish the research but sell it or use it.

Can confirm. I don't do cocaine specifically, but I'd rather not throw money and fuel the fire that is violent cartels. Rather give it to a legit business that's regulated by the government, or at least for now, buying from a scrawny white guy over the internet and avoid listings that source from the cartel. Not perfect, I still probably fund the cartels somehow.
