Most of the advice I see in places like this saying how you should "just take up a trade" is Americans talking toward other Americans. In America trade school is free for most people, and all the certs are generally included for free too, and you make 40-60k starting immediately. That is why people advise it here as an alternative to university, I don't know that the advice make any sense in a UK context.
