With domestication, hunting, and trapping the animal has little or no chance to secure their survival (or the intended use of their eggs or milk) through their own merits. Their fate is decided before they're even aware of it by forces outside of their control. But fish can simply be smart enough to not take the bait in the first place or have enough finesse to snatch the bait without getting hooked or at least get away once hooked. The fish have as much say in the outcome as the fisherman.
And fish don't seem to mind the hook. I once had the same too small to keep fish bite four or five times.
I wish I'd been taken fishing when I was a sho. I'm mad I had to be taught by my aunt as an adult instead of by my father like normal. And I would definitely take a sho fishing, both because it's fun in its own right and as a good way of easing into less comfortable things like butchering chickens.
