But within living memory boys used to pretty much always be drawn at least somewhat pretty and/or erotic. Even Pierre Joubert, whose style leans way more towards the tough and muscular than these nursery rhyme books, still drew much prettier boys than what you see from modern Western styles. I wonder what caused the shift?
Given anime's ascendance in popularity compared to western animation, I don't think it was popular opinion dictating the change.
