When you're young this is mostly a subconscious issue (I was really sheltered so I wasn't thinking about sexuality very much, and I think that's true of most, regardless) but the issue of prowess and ego is still there. And it's not just a mental thing, it's tied up with your physiology and hormones and stuff.
So anyway if you're made out to be less than your age, if you're in an embarrassing situation and you're teased for it, your body kicks into gear with hormones to get you to try to prove yourself: ie. you get hot and bothered.
At least that's how I look back at the situations I was in. This is what makes sense to me and seems to square with psych and bio lit I've read.
So if you're a boy and you're in an embarrassing situation being embarrassed can get you bothered because your body is trying to get you to prove yourself to be manly: but in the case in question
