Every time he sees or touches Benitez there's a passing moment of shock, and while in the end it's a contrast with the cardinals who were sitting pretty in their positions of authority, using money as they pleased, in the narrative it's used to cast doubt on what the hospital appointment was meant to be. I couldn't help but worry for him, he seems weak and only once even manages to raise his voice, and yet he fusses on Lomeli and makes sure he's fed and comfortable. Even after the election, in the novel, Lomeli walks in to find the tailor trying to sew the robe smaller for him, and he has a sense of humour about never fitting any of the clothes they hand him. I wanted him to accept the care of another himself and be a healthy weight.
Eurovision final is on tonight, I always keep an ear out for a good ship song, and I think there'll be cardinals going round my head this year.
