I think I actually feel more sorry for Shinji in English, because Spencer's voice reminds me that he's a maladjusted young man with daddy issues - no one's going to reach out and help or love him in a way that he needs (except for Kaworu-kun, lmao). Whereas with Ogata, there's a feeling that he's just a "scared little kid" who will be nurtured and cared for, even if that's not what happens in the series. If that makes sense.
