You're absolutely right. Kaworu's appeal has always been the fact that he's not human and does not wish to be one, his views of Shinji and humanity come from the perspective of an angel/God which is why he's so interesting to me. Sadamoto humanizing him via a retread of Rei's character arc misses the point and all the spinoffs that make him comedic relief that only revolves around Shinji miss the point too. Akira Ishida doesn't even consider those portrayals of him remotely respectful to the canon and I don't pay them too much mind either. Though I do like his portrayal in NGE2 besides that one route you're referring to where he uncharacteristically wants to pretend he's human. In all the other routes he's very much Animeworu.
My only issue with Qworu is that he solely revolves around Shinji, his personality still maintains the non-human mysterious and ethereal aura of Animeworu. Compare Kaworu's line in 3.0 "..That's because I only ever think about you" to his whole tirade in ep 24 as he makes his way down to Lilith, he's thinking about humanity as a whole from the perspective of an angel and doesn't even mention Shinji. That's where the difference between these two characters is, but as I said before it seems to be a problem with every character in Rebuild being too focused on Shinji.
