Judging from Joseph's dialogue in his third date after Robert appears, and the photo where it shows Robert happy and close to Joseph:

Joseph probably liked Robert. But not as much as Robert did. After all, they have nothing in common, Robert is hard person to deal with, and about that time things with Mary weren't THAT bad. He wasn't going to leave Mary, that was never on the table, and much less for Robert. He possibly assumed that Robert only wanted sex because how Robert is in general. Robert probably expected otherwise, he crumbled, and in one desesperate attempt to calm him:
