First of all, if anyone took Asuka's place in the Manga, it's not Karl but Shinji. Shinji was the one trying to suppress and hide away from his true feelings and pushing Karl away.
Karl was curious about humans and emotions, he used naive means to learn more about them through Shinji. That isn't anything like Asuka.
Karl never acts to intentionally hurt Shinji, he's being entirely genuine the entire time.
Things like miscommunication and abuse are seen in several other relationships in Eva as well (Gendo/Ritsuko). Choking (Ritsuko/Rei).
Using superficial things like that to say it's the exact same is retarded.
Neither the characters or dynamic are anything alike.
