I think the western fandom disregards their characters on purpose, the western fanbase seems immature to me. They're really tragic characters and even if they're not as sympathetic as they used to be, this only shows what war does to people. Both of them had to shut down their guilt in a way, otherwise they wouldn't be able to go on with the mission.
