Those are Alec and Seregil from The Nightrunner Series>
Its a fantasy series. Sergil is an older well traveled theif and spy. and Alec is young and somewhat naive and has never been anywhere except the small villages near where he lived. Through a series of events Alec become Sergils apprentice. and before long they get swept up in mystery and intrigue that effect the entire kingdom
They are the main characters of the story and their relationship builds gradually over the course of the series. I would say its a very solid
nothing mind blowing but well done and the relationship is sweet

Also while I'm here and being incredibly grateful for a /cm/ lit thread, I may as well recommend this astoundingly hidden gem.
I originally picked it up randomly used for the cover art and the fact that I was desperate for any fantasy books at the time, only to discover halfway through that it was SURPRISE GAY AS HELL.
Seriously it's amazing. You will probably cry.

They have them rarely but I don't think they last very long because most people in /lit/ prefer to read the classics. So you'd probably get responses like The Epic of Gilgamesh, Demian, Death in Venice etc..

I might as well ask this here though. I just read Night Train to the Stars/Night on the Galactic Railroad and it left me with some questions. It's pretty much explained why Campanella and the others are on the train, but I felt like Giovanni didn't really have a reason to be there. Unless it had to do with his feelings/past relationship with Campanella, I'm assuming? The book itself was very short so I'm assuming the movie goes into a little more detail in comparison, but are there any good articles that go in-depth about the story?

Don't think so, unless /cm/ and mods would be receptive to having some kind of /cm/ general chat thread where we could do it. Outside of 4chan the only place I know are the goodreads m/m romance groups but they seem fairly uptight so I've never really checked them out.

I read Melusine this year after finding a copy at a thrift store and taking a chance despite the Fabio-tier cover art, and was actually pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. The world was interesting and the gay was present but didn't bowl you over. I managed to be surprised at (ACTUAL spoilers) [spoiler:lit]the protagonists being brothers[/spoiler:lit]. Guess I'm just that unobservant.

I know there's at least one sequel, and the end of Melusine sort of left a lot of stuff open, are the other books any good?

I actually remember reading a series in the past about a gay detective, he was also HIV positive but I absolutely cannot remember the name of the books anymore.
Was in 2007 and I found the book while I worked in the local library, I still wish I could find it again.

Also, while not absolutely canon, take some Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens.

Yeah, the unfortunate cover art is the most blatantly inaccurate portrayal of a book I've ever seen, they're nothing like shitty romance novels.

The worldbuilding is fucking amazing, the setting is elaborate and well presented (except I never could get all their different words for months and weeks right god damn), Mildmay is a miracle of the universe and just remembering how he talks makes my heart hurt a little realizing there's nothing more to read with him (except a few surprisingly good fanfics that I have also already exhausted).

The other books aren't going to wrench your bleeding heart out like they did with the awful shit that happened with Felix, but yeah the rest of them are good. Fair warning, the one with the girl on the cover has her PoVs in it and they get old pretty fast, but they're not very important and you can probably skip them.

But if you want a conclusion, by all means, yes do read them, even gay aside they're one of the best fantasy series I've ever read. (the gay is a plus though)

Anyone got any high fantasy or historical (set in ancient rome in particular) recs?

Anyway, some of the books I have enjoyed are:

* The Song of Achilles. It's the Iliad retold from Patroclus' point of view, so it's obviously super gay. It's also heartwrenching to read if you are familiar with the Iliad because there's lots of foreshadowing about Achilles & Patroclus' relationship.

*Alexandros: The Lifelong Love Story of Alexander the Great and Hephastian, son of Amyntor. Alexander the Great's life story told in a musical script form. The writing is not amazing, but it has some really sweet moments like Hephaestion telling Alexander that he loves him so much that he only got married to make Alexander happy.

* Dark Lord Seeks Friendship, Maybe More. This book is fucking hilarious. It's basically about an evil overlord who wants ot find a boyfriend while also doing evil overlord stuff.

* Interview with the vampire. Is there anyone who hasn't read this by now? Entry level and the only good one of the chronicles, but it remains a good read.

If you guys are interested in some sci-fi, definitely check out Karin Lowachee's Warchild series. Each book features a different protag, but they're all within the same universe/setting/timeframe and connected. The first two books aren't really M/M centered (but there's A LOT platonic of subtext going on between Jos and his mentor).

>Jos Musey, an 8-year-old boy, is hiding on Mukudori, the space ship that is his home. Pirates have invaded, all adults seem to be dead, and he is taken – along with some other children – to the pirate ship Ghengis Khan where the captain Falcone takes a particular fancy to Jos. As for M/M sci-fi, I was also recommended The Administration series by Manna Francis. I have yet to read it, though.

Finally something in this thread I've actually read! I've read Mind Fuck (first of Manna's Administration series) last year and it was really good. It's not fluffy but it can get sexy and there is actually an interesting plot (kind of a mystery) with cool worldbuilding as well.

Here's some recommendations that might appeal to you

Mary Renault's Alexander the Great trilogy. First book has a strong focus on his relationship with Hephastian. Second one mentions the former but the story is told more from the perspective of a young Persian servant and lover to Alexander.

Anne Carson's "Autobiography of Red" is a verse novel that adapts the Tenth Labor of Herakles only it's vaguely set in the present and has Herakles and Geryon become lovers.

Not set in Rome/Greece but if you want legit historical gay then you have to read "Teleny or the Reverse of the Medal." It's attributed to Oscar Wilde but in reality it was probably written in parts by him and his close friends.

It's full blown gay porn that's so over the top and doesn't hesitate to include detailed descriptions of a multitude of fetishes. Extra lawls if you've seen the 3.0 Rebuild too since the couple in this also share a soulmate like bond that starts with a literal piano montage.

I finally got around to reading Maurice and am thoroughly loving it.

Recently I read The Absolutist. Truly sad but beautiful as so many WWI themed novels, the M/M is not as central as in some of the other titles mentioned here but it is great as well.
Speaking of which, I am also reading The Boy I Love by Marion Husband, it is very much in the same line and takes place in the same time period but has a greater M/M focus.

You should check out the 1987 movie. It follows the book pretty much exactly and Hugh Grant plays a good Clive. Also features full frontal male nudity in the sex scene which is a plus.

Speaking of which maybe this thread could include movie/show recommendations. I never saw something like this on /tv/ and I know /his/ does similar threads for media related to the topic.

I just found it - it's Child of the Night. I agree with it not being that good, but it's still one of the best "Dracula but gay" adaptations. For example, I read L'autre Dracula and it was so bad I had to will myself to finish reading it.

I've always liked how his sexuality's relevance was handled in this series.
He was openly gay for the whole series except the very beginning, and his lover was a plot point, but not The Plot, though a few villains tried to briefly seduce him.
I like that it wasn't the focus, but it wasn't ignored either.

The first book is pretty upsetting and depressing, the second a bit more positive in that he's not constantly miserable, but there's still an underlying sense of 'nothing will ever really be okay again', and the third book makes it all totally worth it (everything WILL be okay again <3).
The ending is really, really good.
Note: this series is a prequel set pretty far in the past in the general Valdemar timeline, so a lot of books in the series reference it during historical exposition- they will probably spoil you.

Anyone read Fog by Jeff Mann? I just finished it last night. It was about two guys who kidnap another guy, and hold him prisoner in a secluded cabin. One of the kidnappers has a sort-of romance with the kidnapped dude. It's not really a menage story, only a little bit in the beginning I guess. Anyway, it had some bdsm elements but I found it quite sweet in the end. If you can deal with the noncon at first it gets really good later on.

If you're looking for something in the same bein as Mary Renault's Alexander's trilogy and Song of Achilles, I recommend An Arrow's Flight by Mark Merlis. It follows the son of Achilles.

As for more contemporary settings, I recommend Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman. It's something of a coming of age novel, takes place in the Italian Riviera and features a precocious teen falling in love with one of his intellectual parents' guests who is staying over the summer. Often angsty it can also be very sweet and beautifully written.

This is where people mess up a lot.

Also ask yourself if you want to write a realistic romance, romance at all or just some naughty fucking.
Do you want people to get off this or do you want them to care for your characters and their world, the setting and their adventure?

Honestly, it's not much difference compared to het romance.
If they are just gay and nothing else it will suck, just a book that is nothing but girl loves boy, boy loves girl, things happen that don't matter because the most important is the romance part anyway.

General homoerotic subtext you see in a lot of Japanese literature, especially when concerning surrealism. But there is a gay character in the novel (who is gay in a weird way). But the characters are in general /cm/, and it's just a great book. Very dreamlike and thought-provoking, but not pretentious whatsoever.

There are also some tricky ways of ripping the original book from amazon trials (guides are posted on private trackers) or getting books from free by requesting a refund.

You can also rip a bunch of books off overdrive which is what most trackers doo.

Yeah I feel bad for posting that, taken out of context it really gives totally the opposite impression of the rest of the book. The setting is very complex and well thought out and realistic, I love it. I've already preordered the third book, it's out on the 2nd of February.

Man I can see Ai no Kusabi too, but Laurent is just too much like Griffith. Iason was tall, broad shouldered, and imposing and people were intimidated by him and his position right away, but Laurent is smaller and more noticeably beautiful, and he has the same sort of magnetic charisma as Griffith that allows him to verbally or physically wreck someone and turn them into a loyal follower as a result.

I can easily see the Laurent/Griffith connection, so much so that Laurent, despite being famous for his ice queen status, also knows how to use his beauty to get what he wants.

The main reason why Captive Prince reminded me of Ai no Kusabi is not so much the characters themselves as the way sex pets are handled. The public performance angle along with the chains clinch the deal further.

They did finally end up giving eachother hand-jobs without the slave kid having a PTSD breakdown and crying finally, though.

There's another book coming out at some point but man I'm not sure I want to waste another twelve bucks on this shit.

Also as a side note, the wizard was CONFIRMED for wanting the dick really badly and PTSD-kun still wouldn't stick it in him for ???? not really any reason??? Wizard-kun was pretty peeved about it. However, we got a pretty hot scene of PTSD-kun getting fed up with him being an asshole, shoving him to the ground, and molesting the big bad wizard who turned out to be a total fuccboi slut. That was awesome.

Wizard-kun ended up changing his hair three times. First it was black with turquoise streaks, then it was long white-blond (maximum bishounen) and then it was blue. Fuckin blue. And the entire time he was described to have golden skin- which everyone seemed to pretend was really really attractive instead of weird and freakish and not matching his hair ever.

I think the best part was halfway through the second book another pair of homos was introduced, one of which was a shy quiet tall dude and the other was a short, loud friendly guy, and the stoic ended up being an INCREDIBLY MOE alien badass /who fucking bottomed to the smaller guy/. WHY CAN'T THE SERIES BE ABOUT THEM? THAT'S FUCKING GOLD.

tl'dr; they never fucked, wizard really wanted the D, bel is best boy and the series should be about him and rayne

Since the book has a chapter out on fanfiction.net, I wouldn't be surprised if fans trickled out from there to leave nice reviews on amazon. Other than that, not many people seemed to have even known about the book's existence (until now). It probably didn't catch the attention of anyone who would leave a bad review, so the good reviews are all that's there. But this depends on how nice the reviews are and honestly, I'd put my money on your guesses instead. I'm just happy you've brought your take on the books here for me to see. I've been writing a book of my own for a few years now, and I only decided to make the MC gay probably several months ago, and started working in his sexual development as a subtle sort of thing, not really terribly relevant to the plot, but the one character that it would make the most sense and be the most satisfying for him to fall in love with is also the one character I was already planning on killing off in the very last chapter. And now I'm worried about whether that's just going to make everybody hate it, because I know how much everybody hates the commandment that thou-shalt-not-give-a-gay-MC-a-happy-ending.

Can it be done right?

I don't know, I'd say the series is pretty straighforward regarding the relationship between Nezumi and Shion. I don't read YA novels usually, nor do I care fo sci-fi and there's certainly faults with how the story was developed, but I did appreciate how both characters grew and changed thanks to each other, for better or worse.

I also find it better than the stuff that's been recced here so far. Fantasy is shitty rehash upon shitty rehash. Renault's portrayal of Alexander is the historical novel version of shitty yaoi fanfic where the mc is a woobie adored by everyone and where 'everyone' has no other characteristic than being amazed by how amazing mc is. Song of Achilles does the same and it was so fucking embarrassing I couldn't finish it. Kafka on the Shore is entry level pretentious bs. Forster's Maurice is ultimately shallow and Wilde's works in general are way overhyped.

Night on the Galactic Railroad on the other hand I found very touching and while I can't recommend any articles on the matter, I'm pretty sure that anon's guess is spot on. BL or not, a great read in any case.

Pacat's trilogy is 'good' for what it is, and it doesn't try to be anything more than that: slow burn gay romance with political intrigue. Her prose isn't the best and it's no DEEP masterpiece, but I'll take something simple and honest over something that takes itself way too seriously when it really, really can't and shouldn't.

Actual good literature I can think off the top of my head that contains m/m relationships:

I like that Nezumi left because it shows his growth as a character. He didn't give any fucks about anyone in the beginning, but his relationship with Shion was not healthy, from both of their ends. Nezumi realized he had some growing to do, but also wanted to go on that journey. Sure it's heartbreaking, but they both needed to seperate and grow as people for a bit.
The fact that he could acknowledge that he was bad for Shion made me like the books more. They weren't the healthiest relationship but props to Nezumi for acknowledging that and taking initiative. That went to show just how much Shion meant to him by the end of the books.

#ebooks on IRC highwaynet is apparently faster and more stable than #bookz too. I think that Searchook/uploaders aren't always on #bookz so it can be a bit of a pain compared to highwaynet.

I agree. Nezumi's problem, though, was also his fear of intimacy and being tied down by someone. His story in Beyond is very interesting in this regard and highlights also how Nezumi idealizes Shion. I think that's another big issue. Nezumi has put Shion on a pedestal and will attribute anything remotely bad Shion does to his own influence, whereas Shion, while not a bad person, can be ruthless if it means protecting who/what he has chosen to prioritize. This is why I really want a sequel after Beyond. Imagine Nezumi returning not because he's finally more at ease but because he was too unsettled by the man he met and what could happen to Shion. He gets to No.6 and has to face the reality of that man being Shion's father and Shion having become a ruthless politician like the previous No.6 executives. It's the perfect setting for them to resolve everything once and for all.

Okay, seriously though. This book is alright, but the main character is sort of the same archtype as Laurent, only way, way less developed. Which is okay, because it's just a comedy, but it's really jarring to go from Captive Prince to this.
It's very lighthearted, but the humor is less mature than I'd hoped, so overall it's been pleasant, but nothing special. Unless you're a 15 year old girl, in which case it will be the best thing ever.

Yes, it's some fictionpress stuff, but I honestly didn't mind it. I liked the characters and their interactions quite a bit. The setting is also pretty interesting, though how little gets explained at a time or at all can be frustrating.

It's pretty trashy in a lot of ways, but also pretty good and subverts a lot of tropes. The writing also isn't half bad.

I had a friend in highschool who used to praise Robin Hobb up and down, so a few months ago I finally bought the series whose cover art I'd been eyeing for years.

That series was the Soldier's Son trilogy.

I think you know what happened, and why I'm so hesitant to read Farseer.

Full disclosure, I've read books from the two and 2/3 trilogies focusing on Fitz out of order based on what my library had at the time, so I can't give a proper review. But I finally started reading the first series properly from the beginning and yeah, it's good. A lot of flaws I could nitpick in a longer review (some telling where there should be showing regarding character relations, MC angst to Vanyel levels at times), but it has some good characterization and is generally a pretty fun series aside from all the angst.

All I know about Soldier Son is that it's polarizing. What did you think of it?

Also just realized I should add this given the thread's focus on romance, there's some gay content in that Fitz's best friend (who has an ambiguous gender but is seen by most people in-series as male) is in love with him, and Fitz, despite being really annoyed at everyone thinking they're lovers, comes to feel pretty deeply for him in turn. It's a pretty moving relationship, so while I wouldn't recommend reading the series just for canon, reciprocated gay romance, the subtext/text that's there is a perk.

I mean, okay, she gets props for having the guts to make her main character enormously fat and portraying the realism of how people look down on you when you're fat. But dear god, don't make that the whole fucking story. And don't make it all fetishy.

By halfway through the second book it is absolutely fucking fetishy. Feeding fetish, fat fetish, food fetish, all that shit, it's gross as hell. And again, I appreciated her ability to make me feel gross. But that's basically THE WHOLE PLOT past the first book!

I didn't pick this shit up so I could read Diary of a Sad Fat Man, or A Fanfic Detailing my Fat Fetish. Jesus christ, who let her believe this was a good idea? Why didn't someone sit her down and have a talk with her?

Have you read the Tawny Man? Back in highschool said friend lent me the first book and I was far too stupid and young to have the patience for it, so it took me like a year to get through the whole thing and I remember absolutely none of it. I only found out a year ago that it was actually a series, which explains why I remember being disappointed by the ending.

I've read the last book and skimmed through the second (that was where I realized I had to actually read the books from the beginning because I was totally lost).
