>>2978509Every design goes through Anno before it goes in the movie. There is a ton of concept art being done by various artists, then Anno and co figure out what works and what doesn't.
Some of the examples included in the CRCs:
-Yamashita did the Mark.06 head design, Anno did some changes to it and sent it back, Yamashita redrew it with the needed changes and sends it to Honda who tweaks it for animation, which Anno also has to approve in the end.
-Koyama Shigeto was asked to do a ton of concepts of Asuka's slutsuit because of one really slutty Rei pic he did for Gainax's Top Page illustration years ago. The design settled on got a bit more fiddling from Sadamoto and then gets handed off to then animation director Hidenori Matsubara again with the director's approval of every step.
-okama did all of those big-tittied and totally inappropriate to post on /cm/ concepts in
>>2978403. Mahiro Maeda and a bunch of other people also did and it was Maeda's big ass imageboard painting that won out.
-okama also did some Lilith on a cross concept art for 1.0 (the checkerboard pattern from which made it into dead lilith in Q), Yamashita also took a crack at new hanging Lilith design but in the end Anno ended up drawing the final thing himself looking much closer to the TV version except for the mask
There is dozens of designers involved some of whom have very, very narrow specialties. Anno also clearly has his own range of what he'd rather get involved with down to the deepest level (cityscapes, aircraft, effects shots) while dumping other stuff (boring people sitting around and talking) get dumped on Tsurumaki and Masayuki. These aren't absolutes of course, there's always lots of collaboration with as many people as needed or as seems interesting, but in the end things do need stamps of approval and instruction at many steps along the way before things are finalized. Both the CRCs and Groundwork books are full of corrections.
