In Terminian culture, it's verboten for the engaged to meet without their wedding masks in hand, similar to how in Western culture it's taboo for a bride to be seen by the groom in her wedding dress before the actual wedding. This was a promise he made to her, so he was dead set on keeping it. It's explicitly stated that Kafei being a child had absolutely nothing to do with him avoiding Anju, which is seen in the actual ending of their questline. Kafei returns with the mask, still a child, and embraces Anju nonetheless.
