In my opinion "you were as lonely as" leaves out the part about how much Yui's love meant to Gendo in general, and sounds, idk less genuine? It would be saying like Kaworu doesn't like anything about Shinji in particular, when, apart from what he says in ep 24, here in his crying scene (and like Kaji says) he loves the way Shinji is and if Shinji were to change he would still like that too, even if it felt a little lonely, because to Kaworu change is good.
