It’s easier to think of them as Nadia characters and others transposed to a different back story, with even more personality flaws and a focus on their flaws and sad pasts. Honestly, Nadia was intresting when she was suicidal and her mistakes caught up to her. Everything from Toji’s death is pretty much Shinji in that state. Only because his mistakes he let his Jean die.

Salaryman just bastardized the character, did a cardboard hero act, willingly abandoned his friends for respectability. Maybe it doesn’t erase his character but it makes him deeply unlikable and unironically pretends that’s the right thing to do. If you liked Shinji in the anime you shouldn’t like him. At least he wouldn’t do something so shallow.
