Betrayal had nothing to do with Mari, it's clearly about Shinji going full idiot and pulling out the spears when Kaworu told him not to. So like, as some sort of parallel to ep 24, except this time around it's Shinji that "betrayed" Kaworu.
I doubt Mari had ill motives, her characterization was just all over the place.
