It's not about friendship either. It's that Kaworu was drawn to Shinji because he was miserable, lonely, with a cruel fate, and Shinji was unchanging beacon of light. That's what I think the ambiguity in the script is for, not for a was it love or was it friendship cop-out.

It's just a shit thing to do and undervalues the human bonds that Eva is best known for in order to prop Mari up as the only "good" love interest. They could have done that without shitting on the character relationships with Shinji, a mere "she makes him happy and is fun to hang out with her" is good enough fuck.

He explicitly mentions both, but at the same time I think it's also possible to take that sameness to mean that neither of them could change. Anyhow, the fact is that Khara chose to make it ambiguous. This is just my theory for why they did it. They wanted both readings to be plausible, or maybe they even wanted both to be equally true at the same time.

It's not ambigous if they connect it with NGE, anon. And how Shinji specifically departs from Asuka, Kaworu and Rei to live with Mari. They didn't have him depart like this from Misato, Toji, Kensuke, etc. The three are juxtaposed as love interests.

That doesn't mean that the line itself doesn't carry ambiguity. Or maybe you would prefer complexity? Look, they left the reading ambiguous. This was done on purpose. This is a fact. Clearing it up would have been as simple as writing the word with the kanji that usually carries romantic connotations, but they didn't. Because their relationship and the reasons that pulled Kaworu to Shinji are much more complex than simple romantic attraction.

Most Japs watching the movie aren't watching it with subtitles on, so they'll come up with their own conclusions based on how they hear it in the context of the scene. Kinda how Kaworu's Koui/Koi line was in episode 24.

I know, I was actually going to bring this up earlier in the thread to shoot down the anon who made the first post. But the script is still the script, and to be honest I actually like the ambiguity. There's some pottery in keeping romantic attraction, and the kind of attraction that draws a moth to the flame equally possible. It's just an elegant way of describing Kaworu's feelings.

I like it too, and to be honest I was always in the camp of Kaworu's feelings being more pure/all-encompassing for Shinji whereas Shinji's feelings for Kaworu seemed strictly romantic/sexual. I know a lot of people don't see it that way so I'll just say that's my personal interpretation.
