>>3018281>>3018283Kaworu has never felt the kind of love that a human may give to someone else, so that situacion is too much for him. For that reason, he gives up and decides to do what Shinji has said him about living his own life.
It’s important to take into account that all is going to be okay if Shinji and Kaworu’s relationship is good, it is clear that the reason of Kaworu wants to live is Shinji and only him.
>For a depressed person, hearing things like "you're loved" or "you matter" is very important.
I think that’s why people usually focus on how much Kaworu would help Shinji.
If you keep in mind the anime, you can notice all friendly smiles that Kaworu dedicates to Shinji. This is very clear in the department scene and before Shinji kills him. But the smiles that he does to Misato and members of SEELE are only courteous gestures; they are cold/don’t have true emotions. It’s like he doesn’t care their opinions about his mood (I think he was very happy to have been with Shinji at the end to think about other details).
Shinji decides to get closer to him though they have just met each other. Shinji is never forced to do anything that he doesn’t want to do: when Kaworu touches his hand, he jumps, yes, but he never apart it or gives Kaworu a grimace of reproach; and, when Shinji realizes that his feelings isn’t reject by Kaworu. So, it’s obvious why he falls into Kaworu’s attraction.
How many times people mock at Shinji not to acting as a man should be? Kaworu gives him his kindness and acceptance. And, although it is very utopic that somebody accepts you without asking for something else, with Kaworu is viable because he is an angel; he learned about human’s feelings but he is not running according to Lilins’ behaviors.
He can love Shinji without asking for anything in return because he can be happy since Shinji is happy as well.
