>>3058129Finland has deep mistrust of Russia from previous experience - the country used to be part of the Kingdom of Sweden before being conquered by the Russian Empire, then later, after it became independent, it was in conflict with the Soviet Union during World War II over territory in the north and in the south (with Nazi Germany support, as Nazi Germany was itself in conflict with the Soviet Union), with the end result being a loss of Finnish territory at the border, but not the loss of the whole country, contrary to what the Soviet Union most likely initially intended.
Finland's mistrust of Russia is a factor in its recent adhesion to NATO following the invasion of Ukraine. On the other hand, Finland considers Sweden as an ally. Both countries are in the EU (and now in NATO)
