Nothing. They're wrong, but it's a pointless argument. There's no way to convince a spammer, they probably already know the truth and are just doing it for the lulz. If you want to waste your time, you can post links to old threads, interviews with Gengoroh Tagame, blog posts by people in Japan. You can even present commercial manga they'd consider "bara" and show how it's not marketed as something separate. But be aware that you're posting those things for your own sake, and at best you may help some mildly confused lurkers. No matter how hard you try, you can't educate the spammers. The more you reply, the more you're letting them play you. Just don't bother.

Haiki's gender doesn't matter. He doesn't talk about it and no one in Japan cares. He's succeeding because he's good, not because he's male. If he were female, he'd succeed just the same in Japan and his art would have no more or less value there. My disagreement goes a bit further than "who is the next Mentaiko". I don't want to get into a whole argument because we probably just have different perspectives, no big deal, but since you asked:
On the topic of acclaim, I think Haiki is popular in the West right now because his art is appealing and he's been scanlated a lot recently. However, he's only just started his commercial career and the current BL industry has space for guys like him in magazines like Adam, Charles Mag, and Reijin Uno. It feels too early to say he's as acclaimed as Mentaiko, who was revolutionary when he was published even though he never finished a serialization. Draw Two and Tsukumo Gou are probably closer to Mentaiko's level of influence and acclaim, as they successfully bring styles that are even more archetypal of geicomi to commercial BL, but it's still hard to compare because there was a lot of debate back in the day on whether Mentaiko could be considered geicomi at all.

Based on the failure of MASSIVE with their anthologies no longer in print, Irodori having only Naop, and no new player has shown up, it feels like it and there's fujobuck-equivalent.
Even those going independent have meh sales based on DLSite purchase count of English works. To be fair, those often have bad English.
There's Ichikawado who's in Fakku but the uncensored dicks looked pasted on.

First, basics. A manga isn't just geicomi because a man drew it or fapped to it, it's a scene with its own trends. There are crossover artists like Draw Two who have both BL and geicomi publications, but geicomi also has gachidebu and muscle shota which appeal mainly to men. Geicomi is almost completely doujinshi-based, and crossover artists are usually (with a few exceptions like Okura) published commercially as BL.

On Mentaiko's legacy, artists like Tsukumo Gou, Draw Two's commercial work, and Haiki are thriving while in the same "in between" position as him, as are many female mangakas like Misaka Niumu, Madara Mada, and Katagiri Lyla. Their Muscle BL is smutty and often highlights masculine bodies with less cartoony art, but while they might have a higher number of male mangakas and readers, they're still part of the BL industry. It's actually super popular at the moment. Japanese consumers just don't care as much whether the mangaka whose art they're fapping to is male or female. Assuming that a male mangaka will deliver "good representation, authentic gay experience" and seeing that as a desirable thing in porn is a mainly Western point of view. That said, there are some artists like Suvwave who do focus on the gay experience, check him out if you like chubby guys.
Oh and, the same folks who publish Mentaiko's commercial BL (Future Comics/BOYS FAN) also published Chiku Bingo. That was surprising but cool to see.

Not trying to start a scanlation debate, I don't buy much either, but when everything worth having is already scanlated or gets ripped quickly, there's little incentive to buy.

Forgot to say, there were crossover magazines publishing both BL and geicomi out there before Mentaiko too, back when the two were much more separated. Kinniku Otoko by Ookura Shuppan is a good magazine to look into if you're curious, it has things like Matsumoto Inaki's Nakayoshi Wanko, Takeshi Matsu's stuff, old Ike Reibun titles. Close to even mix of male and female mangaka, with geicomi classics alongside rising stars of BL. The artists from that magazine were probably more influential than Mentaiko on the industry as a whole, and most of the art was much more muscular than Mentaiko's is. Looking at it, I can understand why people say Mentaiko is BL. Now, of course, they'd all be Muscle BL.

Speaking from someone who despite the inconvenience used to import, and nowadays still deal in digital despite the annoyances with credit card acceptance, I bought books and the like from an artist I liked despite not being able to read them often. At least not my copy, I enjoyed scanlations in their heyday.
Nowadays, I'd suggest the same, since there are even more shops where the artist can get a better cut, and for the most part, it is still the case that translators artists rely on for the appreciated outreach are still scam artists to an extent. Whether by being shit at the job or being a classical version by actively taking a comparatively large cut and not doing the work/relying on Google and just submitting that as actual work.

You're an exception that proves the rule. In fact, you're even making it harder to gauge if their outreach is successful or not because it's not like you'd buy the work again.
It's reasonable to think that the artist gets scammed by the translator by not actually doing it seriously. It's not like the artist can verify if the translation is correct every single time.
There's also the time being spent on typesetting unless they pay for that too.

I also support the artists as well. Some of the stuff that gets uploaded online on sites like Ex-hentai or MRM aren't usually the best of quality, so when I buy the digital versions, I usually scanlate/decensor their works for my own personal use. I'm ashamed to admit, but this past month, I spent far too much on smut than on other personal hobbies, mostly on Patreon artists and the less popular gachi BL/geicomi works that never gets shared.

I think there is a market for bara in the west. Patreon/Fanbox artists proves that the west is more interested in a subscription style rather than publication. Geicomi is usually more expensive than the average BL, usually two to three times, so that is one of the few reasons why they don't sell as much. An artist who knows their audience and could capitalize on them, like Rokudenashi, was one of the highest earners on Patreon regarding gay art. Then there's commissions on Skeb that enables artists to earn way more from one piece of artwork that they could get from a publicized doujin.

Funnily enough, often they do. I studied psychology in Uni and one of my professors did lots of academic research into what is considered 'psychopathy' (which is not a recognized disorder, antisocial personality disorder is, though my prof argued for it to be separated) and they often do have people they genuinely love or at least feel some empathy for, most commonly their mothers and in some cases children/spouses.

No, Inariya is just period-typical melodramatic/edgy and while I agree some of her works aged poorly or had really poor circumstances (see Hyakujitsu which suffered badly in the publisher limbo), her worldbuilding is solid, she has an attention to detail and her characters have at least some logic to their actions. Shinou Ryo can't create plot or character reasoning that'd stick together for more than two chapters at a time so it reads like a manga equivalent to being a passenger of drunk driver. It's fast, wonky, jumpy and dramatic at the same time. They both get derailed by sex/moe sometimes, but the degree of derailment is much different.

They're annoying even in mobile format, you scroll endlessly and only get spread out, disjointed panels glued with endless empty filler. Webtoon format has its own potential but very few artists approach it with with any creativity so it usually relies on speed scrolling rather than deliberately laid out flow. Tbh most traditional format manga these days don't innovate much either but at least they can rely on groundwork laid by others (including, as always in this genre, 24nengumi). Webtoons don't have that.

I'm not even convinced that it deserves to be on the chart. I'm on chapter 12 now and the sex is good but the story is not good. With it being so difficult to get ahold of- it just isn't worth the effort and I don't think it should be one of our recommendations.

Don't use amazon if you don't have to, they're expensive and have high fees so less money from sales goes to publisher/author. For digitals you're spoilt for choice, I also recommend Cmoa (lots of bonuses and coupons) as well as Honto (they have better image quality for some titles but be wary that some of their titles can only be read on their app which disallows screenshots).
There's also DLsite good for doujins, book DMM they also sell AV, ebookjapan, comic-k etc. All of these were tried by either me or my friend with foreign cards. The only one I really can't rec is Renta, they have shit quality and are generally expensive.

Also, I have a small announcement to make: Henceforth I will no longer be recommending cover and topic suggestions at the end of each bump limit. The reason for this is that since thread #29, almost all the topics and covers have been provided by myself, and although I have always tried to remain somewhat neutral and provide a diversity of choices, I feel that over time these threads and discussions have been mostly a reflection of my own personal tastes and biases. This was a departure from my initial intent, which was just to have some contingency plan to prevent disasters like with thread #27.

So for the time being, I've decided to step back and let other anons make suggestions, I won't be the one doing this forever after all. I'll still be lurking in the background and participate in discussions, and I look forward to what you anons come up with!

Also also, I've updated the BL manga tierlist again. The current list now includes over 600 titles including recommendations by anons such as Aitsu no Daihonmei and Karasugaoka Don't Be Shy.

ever since zines/artbooks got popular, i wonder why eng fans don’t just make their own doujins by themselves like japan, korea etc. fans instead of how with zines they make sign-ups, have tiers like kickstarter, etc. it just seems like a lot of work/drama to do all that instead of just selling their comic online.

It's unprofitable. Why draw 20 or more pages of scripted doujin and then sell it for 5-10$ when you can charge the same for the priviledge of viewing 3-4 contextless fanart on patreon. If west did doujins they'd want 50$ per digital booklet to compensate their incredibly precious workhours spent on drawing someone else's characters/their OCs fuck. Zines only work because they have a couple random fanart done one per person so it's not much work for better exposure.

Despite enjoying Aien, I can actually recall very little of it besides it's period setting. The characters and for the most part unremarkable, I felt like the seme, being a servant, was mostly just going along with the uke's whims which don't lend well to character agency or even conflict, internal or external. In fact, I'd argue both characters are relatively one-note. Yes, I can admire a gay uke who embraces what he wants on his own terms at the end, but then this isn't really unique to Catharsis or even compared to the mangaka's other manga. This isn't even getting into the issue of what title on the chart deserves to be replaced, and I can't see this work being better than any on there at present.

In fact, if I had to recommend one work by Ohsima, it would be Chicken Heart Serenade. Despite having read it before Aien, Serenade is the title that continues to leave a much longer-lasting impression, and it's entirely down to its characters and their interaction, not its setting or art, but the small little developments in the relationship you pick up on as the story progresses. And it's precisely because of those interactions and developments that panels like pic hit so hard for me. It's gonna stay for a while.

Chicken Heart does have its problems, and I don't know if it's chart-worthy, but I do think it has more 'heart'.

Honestly the first part with Mafuyu is undoubtedly the best part of the story. Then it gets dragged to oblivion and the manga's story quality drop like a rock. Not helping that the other pairs are shit compared to the first one. People turn on it because it should have ended with the first pair or remain focus on them instead.

What initially felt like a fresh take on sublimating one's grief over the loss of a loved one, has slowly deteriorated into an endless trope fest of BL cliches and repetitive narrative cul de sacs. Seriously, this will be the third time 2 guys will have to resolve their romantic conflicts by having someone sing a song on stage.
And I get it, one makes allowances for manga stories, but it really is a stretch that 100% of the bishie guys in every band end up being paired off with each other in this series. Sure it is possible that they all were so inclined but the happenstance, presented with little concern, foreshadowing or explanation beyond “lightning strikes” strains believability. And the author wanted this to be a realistic BL...
(And as an aside, why can't anyone talk like a normal person in this series?)
It's also been 4 volumes and who knows how many years and there has barely been any development, or even romantic interaction, with the main couple since vol.2.
I think it's clear the author has a good understanding of how to generate melodrama, but absolutely no idea what to do with her characters once they are in a relationship. Maybe once the Shizu and Hiragi arc is finished she'll finally be forced back to the main couple seeing as she's now run out of boys to pair up. Maybe we'll finally get back to that. Maybe.
(Or who knows, maybe that one straight photographer will come out as bi and start persuing Ugetsu)

If you're talking about aocs.jp then that's a proxy.
The main difference between a proxy and a forwarder is a proxy involves payments passing through them. You pay the proxy (with their own fees) to buy the item for you then ship it to your location (with more fees). You use a proxy if your card is not being accepted by the store.
A forwarder just forwards whatever package you sent to them to you after paying the fees. Usable only if you can use your card but just don't have a JPN address. This would mean you'd use your card in Toranoana then provide the address the forwarder assigned to you.
Just start with a proxy first. It'll be more expensive but it'd help you learn until you can use forwarders by yourself and save fees.

I used tenso, they have tutorials on how to manage your order. Just wanted to say, none of the stuff I put in my OP posts is necessary beyond "BL discussion thread". If I stop showing up someday, or if it's just getting late and you don't want to wait, go ahead and Copy/Paste my OP post. Take out the bits you don't care for, or write your own. Even the rec list isn't necessary, especially now that we have a great chart.
